Dwight Black considers himself a lucky man. He fell while getting out of bed, hitting his head; he still isn’t sure if he blacked out. He immediately had some tingling in his arms but cast it off as nothing and went back to bed.
When he got up things had not changed so he called his primary care physician who instructed him to go to the emergency room to be checked out. In the ER, they proceeded to take an X-ray and, while there, he collapsed. He suddenly lost all feeling in this arms and legs. He couldn’t move.
He was diagnosed with a C-2, C-3 fracture and needed emergency surgery. The fall occurred on Christmas Day and as luck would have it, it was also his birthday. “I was in the hospital for one week and I was told I had a spinal cord injury and that I needed rehab and would be transferred to HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital where they offer a spinal cord program.”
Upon arrival, Dwight couldn’t walk or go to the bathroom by himself. Occupational therapy worked with him to build the strength in his arms and upper body while physical therapy concentrated on strengthening his legs so he could walk.
“Everyone took care of me, the nurses were kind and patient and everyone offered encouragement telling me I could do it. They all pushed me to meet my goal.”
Dwight was at HealthSouth for six weeks and upon discharge he was using a walker. “I have come such a long way from when I started. I started out using a walker, then a cane and now I don’t need either. I am back to driving and helping my wife around the house. I would recommend HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital to anyone who needed rehab, people can’t do it on their own, they need the team approach that is offered at HealthSouth. Thank you, HealthSouth for getting me back on my feet.”
HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital is the only freestanding acute care hospital on the Treasure Coast. It is staffed by rehabilitation professionals who specialize in physical medicine and offers a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation.
