Patient Testimonial

Robert Bowshier

Rober Bowshier “I’ll never forget the date that changed my life, Jan. 19, 2012, at 1:30 a.m. I got up to go to the bathroom and my right leg gave out.  I was on the floor trying to tell my wife to call 911 but my words were slurred and wouldn’t come out.  I remember thinking, this is the big one.”

This scenario was familiar to Bob.  He has a history of TIA’s (Transient Ischemic Attack) but this seemed much worse.  Bob Bowshier was having a stroke.  After spending six days in the hospital his doctor told him he was ready for rehab and insisted he go to HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital in Vero Beach. “I live over an hour away from Vero Beach but that didn’t matter, he said you were the best and had a certified stroke program, that’s all I needed to hear.”

Upon arriving at HealthSouth Treasure Coast, Bob had no movement in his right arm or hand. He had right leg weakness, slurred speech and swallowing issues. “I was eating pureed food and could only swallow by turning my head a certain way. Beyond words, I was a beaten man.”

Speech therapy worked with his speech and swallowing issues and physical therapy worked with strengthening his right leg and teaching him how to use a walker.  Occupational therapy worked with strengthening his right arm and hand so he could do his own activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and toileting.

Bob shared that his physician, Dr. Lockhart, would stop by to see him every morning and say, “Give me a thumbs up.”  He just couldn’t do it with his right hand. “I spent 14 days at HealthSouth Treasure Coast and at the end of my stay I had graduated from a walker to a cane, to walking on my own without any help. What I like most about HealthSouth Treasure Coast Rehabilitation Hospital is they gave me the confidence not to give up.

The staff motivated me to push myself, they listened when I spoke and made me feel at home. The nurses were sweethearts and I can’t say enough about the staff’s professionalism. I feel I have accomplished something that I could not have accomplished on my own. You think you are beaten but they won’t let you give up.   I will be going back to visit Dr. Lockhart and the staff to say thank you and to give Dr. Lockhart a thumbs up.”
